Abstract:

Experiments were conducted to determine the protection provided the erythropoietic system of rats against whole-body, gamma radiation by mixtures of AET 2-aminoethyl-isothiouronium bromide and erotonin -HYDROXYTRYPTAMINE. The incorporation of iron-59 F -59 IN O NE LY FOR E R BLOOD CELLS WAS USED AS THE CRI ERION OF THE RA IOPRO ECTION FFOR E WO CONC TRATIONS OF A T plus serotonin 40 micromoles AET, 20 micromoles serotonin and 20 micromoles AET, 10 micromoles serotonin offered initial protection against the depression of the erythropoietic rate associated with radiation exposure. The higher concentration of this mixture produced mortality due to the toxicity of the compounds. AET and serotonin mixtures did not alter the initial radiation-induced leucopenia. H OW VER, THE PROTECTED RATS HAD HIGHER WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNTS DAYS AFTER RADIATION EXPOSURE. Daily gains in body weight appeared somewhat gr ater in the rats i jected with AET and serotonin than in the nonprotected, irradiated animaa s. Author
