Abstract:

Biermann Zeitschrift fur Naturforschung, 5a, 651950 has shown that, in a rotating star without any initial magnetic field, the electron partial pressure slowly generates a toroidal magnetic field of considerable strength. The problem is here reconsidered, assuming the star to have a primeval magnetic field, with its poloidal component very much weaker than the toroidal field predicted by Biermann. It is shown that the interaction of the magnetic torque an th rot ion fi ld is sufficient to ensure that the electron pressure has negligible eff ct, whet r or not there is meridian circulation of matter inside the star.
