Abstract:

A shipboard evaluation of experimental signal flags was conducted to determine improvements in long range visibility characteristics, as compared to the standard cotton bunting flags presently used by the Fleet. Fluorescent dyed acetate sharkskin flags which have the visibility range desired but are unsuitable because of poor color fastness and durability were also used as cotrols. Results showed experimental flags fabricated of Acrilan, dyed with selected dyestuffs, to be superior to the standard bunting and comparable to the fluorescent dyed flags. Author
