Abstract:

INTERMETALLICS IN THE Hf-Re system had corrosion rates greater than pure Hf. Alloys containing more than 10 Re all lost weight at the 1000 C test temperature. Corrosion rate data in the Hf-Dy system are presented in tabular form. The rate is apparently proportional to the Dy content. The data in the Hf-B system ar of considerable interest. Although arc melting procedures did not produce intermetallics of the desired B content, nevertheless the results indicate a considerable decrease in corrosion rates due to the formation of a hafnium boride. Preliminary experiments were conducted with intermetallics of the rare earths with phosphorus. preliminary check in the Yt-P system shows considerable improvement in corrosion resistance.
