Research i concerned with analytical solutions of selected passive sonar problem by us of the techniques of statistical communication th ory. Specific problems pr ntly bei g inv stigated are 1 The characteristics of the adaptive nonpar metric-type detector functional when used to detect both gaussian and non-gaussian sign ls in either gaussian or non-gaussia noise 2 Th ch racteristics of t e detector for nois like signals in the presence of impulse-type background noise 3 The opti um use, from a detec ion decision standpoint, of the acoustic information vailable fro a hydrophone array. The practical implement tion of the adaptive detector was considered. A design was obtained which could process 1000 data samples and 3000 noise samples aken at a 2-kc rate, in real time. The detector outputs would be available ith 12 sec of the epoch of the final data ample. A research report describing the status of the analysis on optimal array detection systems is appended to this report. Author
