Abstract:

The PtO2 electrode system is evaluated in a molten carbonate electrolyte at 600 - 800 C by the criteria for reference electrodes. This electrode system is found to be stable and reproducible or - 5 mv and shows a high degree of reversibility by the criteria of bias-potentials, micropolarization, and the Nernst Equation. It is apparent that this electrode system functions as a relative of the metalmetal xide class of reference electrodes. Some results are also reported for gold, rather than platinum, as the metal substrate. While the AuO2 system satisfies the above criteria for reference electrodes, there is evidence that it equilibrates atan energy state slightly higher in thermodynamic free energy than the PtO2 system.
