Abstract:

A signal normalizing amplifier was developed for use in compressing the level of signals having a wide ynamic range to a l vel sui able for recording on mag tic tap or other media having limited dynamic range. Signal compression is effected by automatic ac ion of the amplifier, which c anges i s gain in discrete 10-db steps. Signal distortion is limited to a very small transient of short duration, which occurs only during the transitional period. The gain of this amplifier varies from zero to 40 db although other r nges may be easily incorporated. I ad ition to t signal output, the amplifier provide an indication of amplifier gain which may be used in reconstructing or otherwise recovering information concerning the full dynamic range of the original signal.
