Abstract:

The fraction of nitrogen atoms that recombine upon striking copper and platinum surfaces in a partly dissociated stream was determined. Vacuum-evaporated films and bulk metal samples subjected to various surface treatments were used. The results were independent of flow conditions and atom concentration. A glass substrate affected the activity of copper films, but not platinum. Simple surface treatments of bulk metal samples yielded recombination coefficients comparable to those of vacuum-evaporated films, which are about 0.03 for platinum and 0.04 for copper. Author
