Abstract:

When time-variant noisy two-way channels are protected by coding, they may be used to provide essentially noiseless feedback, with delay. Service messages can be automatically exchanged between terminals, and transmission altered in such a way that the average communication rate is increased, given fixed receiver computers. The system is somewhat similar to human communication, in that typical errors are corrected, while grievous ones initiate a request for retransmission.
