Abstract:

Critical intensities for the pilot ignition of some common materials have been determined. An effort is made to correlate data from a flamespread test in which the specimen is subjected to a non-uniform radiant exposure with data from the pilot ignition of uniformly irradiated specimens in order to understand the effect of the presence of a flame. Intensity of irradiation and time of ignition have been employed in computation of surface temperatures at the time of ignition. Equations are presented which show the dependence of ignition time and surface temperature upon the physical and thermal properties of density, conductivity, and specific heat. Author
