Abstract:

The maintenance and construction of equipment for the generation of pressures up to 100 kilobars and its applications to physico-chemical problems of solid state physics were studied. The following apparatus was constructed and used a Bureau of Standards modified Hall apparatus for pressures to 50 kb high pressure apparatus for x-ray diffraction studies a high pressure camera a Griggs-Kennedy simple squeezer an evaporating unit for deposition on electrode samples and a spot welder. Forty-two publications were issued in connection with this contract 3 publications are in preparation. The high-pressure allotropic modifications of such diverse systems as Fe, Bi, AgCl, KNO3, Teflon, CaCO3, and NaCl were studied by using the techniques developed on this project. Progress was made on the development of the elastic continuum model of diffusion in solids as a function of pressure.
