Use was made of the strong reducing power of the Ge halides in the synthesis of trifluoromethyl Ge compounds. The reaction CH3I GeI2 yields CH3GeI3 constitutes the most convenient method of methyltri-iodogermane preparation. CF3GeI3 was obtained by reacting GeI2 with CF3I. The thermal stability by CF3GeI3 was studied by pyrolyzing the compound alone. It appeared stable when heated in vacuo to 150 degrees for 3 days, but decomposed slowly when the temperature was raised to 180 degrees. The derivatives, CF3GeCl3 and CF3GeF3, were easily prepared by reacting CF3GeI3 with the appropriate Ag halide. Hydrolysis of the trifluoromethylhalogermanes is discussed. Analogous reactions involving other group IV elements, Si, Sn and Pb are also described.
