Abstract:

A mathematical method is presented for accurately determining the location of a mobile tracking radar, such as the DAMP ship, from observed tracking data on an extra-atmospheric ballistic target whose orbital elements are known. The method assumes that the observed radar data range, azimuth, and elevation contain noise which is normally distributed about those values observed by a noise-free and bias-free radar, and are independently distributed. The feasibility of the method was investigated through a series of simulated tests using orbital elements from an actual ballistic missile trajectory. Varying degrees of noise and bias were introduced to determine the effects on the accuracy of locating the mobile radars.
