Abstract:

An investigation of Osmopak packaging film was made to study the mechanism responsible for its reported protection of stored steel ordnance from corrosion. Three other commonly used packaging materials were also studied and compared with the Osmopak. Several experimental procedures employed to elucidate the corrosion protection mechanism are described. The extent of the protection Osmopak provides against corrosion was found to be debatable. Apparently this film cannot maintain low relative humidity conditions within a sealed package. Transfer of moisture through the Osmopak was found to be a physical rate process. There was no laboratory evidence for superior corrosion protection ability. Author
