Abstract:

The re-entry of a missile into the atmosphere at high speed creates a thermally generated plasma around the nose of the missile. This plasma has been found to produce a severe loss in transmission to the extent that 220-mc telemetry data are made unreliable.. There is some hope that this problem can be alleviated by going to higher frequencies where the energy absorbed by the plasma is minimized. The experimental techniques used in the study of this problem are described. Author
