Abstract:

Research is concerned with the development of a small quantum detector of such size and shape that it can be mounted inside the cavity of an inert or simulated EED electroexplosive device, such as the MK I Squib, to monitor the temperature rise of the EED bridge wire when the EED is placed in an electromagnetic field. Design objective is to sense a temperature rise in the bridge wire of 2 C above ambient, with a signal o- oi r io of db, and a time constant of less than 100 microseconds. Investigations in the following areas were initiated or completed 1 to determine which types of existing detector materials could be used, 2 to determine optimum signal-to-noise ratios for various detectors as a function of identical detector and bridge wire temperature , 3 to determine t e feasibility of using a cryogenically cooled detector, and 4 to determine type of chopper best suited for this application.
