Abstract:

Twelve adult men were divided into two equal groups and for 5 days were fed daily 1000Calorie diet consisting e gnitsisting either of 168 grams of pemmican, or 140 grams of pemmican with 40 grams of sugar. Following a recovery period of 7 days ad libitum food intake, all men were fed 168 grams of pemmican for another 5-day period. Various blood and urine metabolites were measured during both experimental periods. It was found that these subjects did not exhibit a carry-over effect from one period of semistarvation to the next. Comparisons made on the basis of body weight indicated that overweight subjects maintained higher blood sugar levels and excreted less ketones than did normal subjects. Author
