Abstract:

A development program was conducted to investigate he application of r itance welding to fabrication of a continuous rod mat. Due to the geometry of the welding joint, projection resistance welding was considered ost pr mising. Several types of inserted projections were investigated. An inserted flat shim proved to be mo t satisfactory. The purpose of u ing 422 modified stainless steel material for a shim was to obtain a high-strength joint without u ing high-strength rod aterial w ich did not h ve the required bend ductility. The 422 modified stainless steel shim was used in both the FS 1018 steel and A-Ni rod joints. The weld joint having a 12-in.-long shim was as strong as one having a 34-in.-long shim. The optimum welding conditions were determined for rods of FS 1018 having both a 316-in. square and a 0.164-x 316-in. cross-section, and for A-Ni having a 0.164-in. square cross-section. The feasibi ity of using T-1, FS 4140, 304 stainless steel, K-Monel, and cupro-nickel 55-45 was also studied. 9author
