Abstract:

A design study was carried out for a GEM based on a set f nominal specifications including a 3- t operating height, a 1200-lb payload, and an 80-knot speed. Preliminary examination of requirements leads to selection of a very lightly loaded 29-ft-effective-diameter planr both fixed and variable tangential deflection, for a singlefan and for a twin-fan design. Performance improves as the complexity of the design increases, but the simplest design single-fan configuration with fixed defle tion requires only alongitudinal and lateral stability and ynamic lateral stability are calculated, the control problem is examined, and calculations for the turning maneuorm, with a gross weight slightly over five tons. Perfor -ANCE CALCULATIONS ARE CARRIED OUT FOR BOTH FIXED AND VARIABLE TANGENTIAL DEFLECTION, FOR A SINGLEFAN AND FOR A TWIN-FAN DESIGN. Performance improves as the complexity of the design increases, but the simplest design single-fan configuration with fixed defle tion requires only alongitudinal and lateral stability and ynamic lateral stability are calculated, the control problem is examined, and calculations for the turning maneuver are made.
