Abstract:

The 15.1 Mev scattering resonance in carbon is used to study the yield of photons at the high frequency limit of the bremsstrahlung spectrum. A survey of the yield from several elements was carried out at 0 degrees where the yield at the limit increased strongly with the atomic number. The yield in the forward direction is strongly dependent on the effective target thickness and is, therefore, difficult to interpret. More detailed measurement of the 15.1 Mev isochromats from a thin thorium Z 90 target at several angl s, are presented and compared with the available calculation a value of 1.61 0.16 mb is obtained for the total cross section at the tip. This is in reasonable agreement with a theoretical value of 1.96 0.38 mb based on the inverse photoeffect and 1.2 mb as obtained by a direct evaluation in the extreme relativistic limit. Author
