Abstract:

This report describes several versions of an instrument generally similar to a polar planimeter which is useful for computing the probability integral relative to a drawing which shows a plane figure, an aim point, and a value for the normal dispersion. Such a drawing might represent, for example, the target and attacking weapon relationships in a weapon systems study. The tegral for plane areas. Since the instruments described are not available commercially, they are described in considerable detail. The report also discusses similar or related instruments, alternative methods of computing the probability integral, and techniques fornstruments described herein are theoretically exact, can be made to give very accurate readings, and their use effects a considerable saving in time and effort compared with alternative methods of computing the probability integral for plane areas. Since the instruments described are not available commercially, they are described in considerable detail. The report also discusses similar or related instruments, alternative methods of computing the probability integral, and techniques for dealing with three-dimension problems. A mat ematical treatment is given of the operation of instruments of this type and it is therein shown that the function fr which is to be integrated may take many forms. The familiar normal frequency function is merely one of the many possible forms. Author
