The Weyl conformal curvature tensor of spacetime is interpreted geometrically in terms of the behaviour of congruences of null geodesics. The corresponding physical interpretation provides, in principle, a means for the measurement of physical components of the Weyl tensor with light rays alone, without the use of clocks or rigid rods.
