Abstract:

A program for the synthesis and evaluation of new pyrazine derivatives for use as gas turbine lubricants was initiated. The objective was the preparation of materials which are liquids over the range of -65 to 600 F and posses desirable thermal and oxidative stability properties at bulk oil temperatures of 450 F to 500 F. The synthesis of unsymmetrical 2,3-disubstituted pyrazines was undertaken. Starting with 2chlor -3-methylpyrazine, successful nucleophilic displacement reactions were performed to replace the Cl with different phenoxide, alkyl- and arylmercapto, arylamino and silyl substituents. The resultant 2-substituted-3-methylpyrazine intermediates were then further modified at the methyl site. Oxidation of some 2-phenoxy-3methylpyrazines was accompanied by decarboxylation, yielding the corresponding monosubstituted pyrazines. The feasibility of introducing various substituents on the methyl site of the 2substituted-3-methylpyrazines was demonstrated with different arylation, aralkylation, alkylation and acylation reactions. Thermal and oxidative stability screening tests were performed on the intermediates in an effort to detect and eliminate undesirable linkages. Author
