A brief and nonrigorous development of useful gas flow relationship is presented. The flow is considered from the one-dimensional aspect however, relevant flow phenomena that do not fall into the one-dimensional category are considered. In general the treatment is for nonviscous flow however, nozzle boundary layer effects are considered. Next the theory is applied to illustrate the functioning of a ramjet as a heat engine. The design and detail functioning of the diffuser, combustor, and exit nozzle and how these are affected by flight environmental conditions and the requirements of thrust and power output are considered. How the basic thermodynamic calculations of a ramjet engine are made is shown. Various engine arrangements are considered, and from there the one having the best figure of merit is picked.
