Abstract:
Electronic computer reduction of upper air data is presented. The computational techniques included are 1 Expressions which will permit the use of the ML-418AMT-4, or the ML-476 AMT Humidity Element, 2 the use of the N-S and E-W components of the surface wind along with the lowest rawin data to obtain the 500-ft wind and the wind at the 1000-mb level, 3 incorporation of a correction to the elevation angles recorded by the Control Recorder to account for the curvature of the earth and the index of refraction, 4 the use of 2-min smoothing for wind computations when elevation angles of the tracking equipment are 15 degrees or higher and 4-min smoothing when elevation angles are below 15 degrees to minimize the effects of antenna hunting at the lower elevation angles, and 5 an expression used for the computation of temperature from radiosonde recorder division values to provide for better accuracy throughout all calibration and scale ranges.
