Abstract:

The gas phase oxidation of sym-diethyldiborane I was studied under both explosive and nonexplosive conditions. The non-explosive partial oxidation was studied from 40 to 80 C. Comparison of the relative rates of I consumption, O consumption and H formation indicates that 2 intermediate partial oxidation products are present. The rate of disappearance of I in the partial oxidation was zero order in O and first to threehalves order in I. The products of explosions with mixtures of O and I 91 ratio were observed to be CO2, H2O and a white solid, presumably B2O3. A well defined explosion limit for the 91 mixtures in 6.8-cm bulbs coated with reaction products was observed. The effect of He and Ar on the explosion pressure clearly indicates that the mechanism causing explosion is primarily thermal. The over--all order of the reaction leading to explosion was in the region from first to three-halvees order. Author
