Abstract:

Each of a pair of cylinders of aviators breathing oxygen taken from stock at the Pensacola Naval Air Station was differentiated by olfaction by subjects with high olfactory acuity. Thus, oxygen from any cylinder would be said to have an odor since it is distinguishable by olfaction from other cylinders. Relationships of cylinder odors to bad oxygen episodes are discussed.
