Abstract:

The statistics of the extrema of the stress at the surface of a supported bar are studied when the lowest mode of the bar is excited by random noise. The stress is a nonlinear function of displacement because the hinged ends have a fixed separation. The effect of this nonlinearity on the distribution of maxima and minima is calculated assuming that the tensile stress does not significantly affect the displacement statistics. The effect of nonlinearity on expected fatigue life is calculated for a linear fatigue law. It is found that nonlinearity may significantly diminish the expected fatigue life. Author
