Abstract:

A survey was made of existing knowledge concerning ionizing radiation in space. It was undertaken as part of a broader investigation of the feasibility of an x-ray space communication system. An attempt is made to provide as definitive an answer as it is presently possible to make the question of the nature and magnitude of environmental background radiation in regions of space that are of interest. Three topics are discussed in detail 1 cosmic rays, 2 geomagnetically trapped corpuscular radiation, and 3 radiation from the sun. Each of these topics is divided into two parts the first part provides a brief review of basic facts and theory, while the second part considers the topic in the context of x-ray space communication.
