Abstract:

ON FM-47 skin to stringer panels, in which the degree of porosity was the determining factor of bond strength, the Fokker Bond Tester, CoindaScope, and STUB-meter predicted bond strengths within or - 1000 psi. The Sonoray 5 was only effective in certain areas of these panels. In these areas this instrument predicted to within or - 500 psi. The HT -424 and Metlbond 4021 adhesive panels contained areas of low bond strength due to poor cohesion between spray coat and film. All four instruments were ineffective on this type of panel. The stainless steel and titanium panels contained three variables which affected bond strength voids, undercure, and poor adhesion. Of these variables only the void condition was detected by the instruments. Author
