Abstract:

The feasibility of the Arresting Cable Pop-Up Device to engage main landing gear assemblies or a small hook attached aft of the main gear was investigated. An F-84G, F-100A, and a B-47 aircraft were used. It was concluded that the pop-up device can be programmed to engage either the main landing gear of most jet aircraft provided they are not carrying centerline or pylon mounted external stores or a short hook attached to the underside of the fuselage behind the main gear. Aircraft main gear engagements were demonstrated with the F-100A up to 143 knots. Engagements of a hook attached aft of the main gear were demonstrated up to 164 knots. Aircraft damage on the F-84G and F-100A was limited to dents and superficial damage caused by the cable. The B-47 main gear engagement attempt resulted in extensive wheel door damage. Author
