Abstract:

This analysis traces the development of the pyrotechnic flash night photographic system with special emphasis on its application and use in Naval reconnaissance aircraft. A program of mathematical analysis is described which includes the development of a graphical method of presenting the operational limits of the night photographic system. A correlation is made between flight test data and mathematical data which reveals that the widely accepted value of .09 foot-candle-seconds for minimum scene illumination is unrealistically low and that .135 f.c.s. is a more practical value.
