Abstract:

The development of a method for determination of heat of vaporization at 25 C of substances exerting a vapor pressure in the range 1 to 0.001 mm Hg started out from the carrier-gas method worked out by Dr. I. Wadso of this laboratory for substances with vapor pressures between 100 and 1 mm Hg Acta Chem. Scand. 141960, 566. In the preliminary investigations it was found that expected variations in back-ground effects due to thermal changes in the carrier-gas during the passage through the evaporation chamber would cause serious difficulties in the low pressure region. This technique was therefore abandoned and, in the next step, different types of large-orifice evaporation chambers were investigated. The results were felt to be promising and a preliminary apparatus was constructed and tested. From the experience gained the design was changed and a calorimeter system has recently been completed which is believed to be of a close to final design. So far, only a few tests have been performed, mainly of a technique for introducing samples and thermal stability. Author
