Twenty papers, a panel discussion, suggested standard symbols for use in research, and an annotated bibliography containing about 290 items on gas- lubricated bearings are presented. The general aspects of the subject of gas bearings are reviewed, the special characteristics are described, and present and anticipated areas of application are listed. Research on gas bearings in the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, at the National Engineering Laboratory, Scotland, and in Japan is reviewed. The theory and design of self-acting, externally pressurized with compressible lubricant, and a bearing of high stability were described journal, thrust, and pivot bearing designs were included in these discussions.
