Abstract:

Twenty-seven concepts for mobile wave attenuators and piers in 6 categories are reviewed toward exploring their capability to form a single mobile unit--termed a multi-purpose harbor unit-which could be used with others like it to form either a breakwater or a pier. The most promising types for use as a multi-purpose harbor unit are a caisson of spaced pontoons Amirikian type - costing about 15,000 per weatherside foot a floating inclined platform of pontoons Patrick type - costing about 40,000 per weatherside foot and a legged platform or legged pontoon with proper attenuator such as a fixed baffle DeLong type - costing about 20,000 per weatherside foot. The last type is considered the most promising and it is recommended that a study of its feasibility as a multi-purpose harbor unit be made. Author
