Abstract:

Progress consisted of 1 the fabrication of 18 steel tubular specimens and testing of units for aging and vibration 2 fabrication and testing of 118 uniaxial tensile and flexural specimens for establishment of design values 3 fabrication and testing of 20-in. diam Ti strip specimens and 4 fabrication and testing of 40-in. diam Ti strip specimens. The 18 steel specimens were internally sealed against leakage for proof testing. These units were then hydrostatically inspected at a proof pressure which would stress the metal in the tube wall to a value equal to the 0.2 offset yield strength of the steel strip. The results of the proof testing and an analysis of the source of failures are included. Addi ional curing pressure was obtained by means of an external restraining device. A theoretical analysis was made to determine the adhesive lap shear strength requirements for 20 and 40-in. diameter specimens. A list is included presenting the current state of the art of adhesives which are commercially available for the joining of Ti. Author
