Abstract:

The results are presented of studies conducted on the preparation of higher oxides of H. The reaction of ozone with hydrazobenzenes, substituted hydroquinones, isopropyl magnesium chloride and cumene did not produce higher oxides. The reaction of O atoms with secondary butyl alcohol produced a normal peroxide. Electrolysis and uv irradiation of dilute hydrogen peroxide solutions did not produce higher peroxides. The reactions of hydrogen atoms with ozone at -196 C gave rise to superoxides, presumable HO2 and H2O4. These species dec mposed at -120 and -90 C, respectively, to give molecular O and H2O2. A mechanism is advanced for the production of these products. The heat of formation of HO2 is 13 or - 10 kcal per mole, and -2 or - 10 kcal per mole for H2O4. The products obtained from H2O and H2O2 in a discharge ube and by the reaction of H atoms with O are compared to the peroxides formed in the H atomozone reaction. Author
