Abstract:

Submicron TaC was produced by vaporization of a TaC-containing electrode in a high intensity arc operated in a H atmosphere. The product was recovered as a powder having an average particle size of 0.01 microns. Attempts to achieve deep impregnation of graphites of various porosities with submicron TaC by electrokinetic methods were unsuccessful. Techniques were developed for rapidly preparing reproducible, thick, TaC-7 wt- Fe - 1 wt- Ni coatings on ATJ graphite by electrophoretic deposition. Although the coatings were extremely adherent, defects in the form of tiny fissures and cracks were developed during the cooling cycle. Six TaC-coated, graphite rocket nozzle inserts were tested in the Naval Ordnance Laboratory H2-O2 rocket motor. The best of the test inserts maintained chamber pressure for approximately 5.5 sec before failure. Examination of the coated inserts after tests showed extensive damage in the throat area. Author
