Abstract:

Unsatisfactory performance of a 16-foot fiberglass reinforced plastic inboard motor launch when operating in choppy water resulted in the design of a larger boat. It was 18 ft long, with a flared bow, higher freeboard, and engine aft driving through a Vee-drive. The project was initiated to construct a wooden plug for test purposes, ballast to designed displacements, test for maneuverability, propulsion characteristics, and dryness in chop, determine the optimum propeller, and determine the effects of a rub rail and a shingle. Standardization trials were conducted under several conditions, and choppy water trials were conducted in company with a 16-ft boat for comparison. Data are given for all trials. Recommendations for improvements are made. The appendix includes data tabulation and guidelines for construction of a plug. Author
