Abstract:
A large-scale model with an unswept wing and a high disk-loading fan mounted in a fuselage duct was tested in the wind tunnel. The test results were used to study transition flight characteristics associated with the submerged fan concept. The fan produced a large pitching-moment variation with increasing forward speed. Proper programing of the transition flight plan required the use of wing flaps, variable angle of attack, and some direct propulsive thrust. Author
