Abstract:

The optical and fluorescent spectra of trivalent Pu-239 in LaCl3 and LaC2H5SO43 . 9H2O were investigated together with the paramagnetic resonance absorption of Pu-239 in LaCl3 at 3 cm wavelengths and 4.2K. The optical spectra were taken at 77, 20 and 4.2K on a grating spectrograph. The over-all splitting of the levels as well as the line widths are about the same as those observed in the corresponding salts of Sm3 4F5. The magnetic quantum numbers of the 3 crystal field components, the observed energies, and the experimentally determined crystal field matrix elements for the 2 salts are presented. The matrix elements of the concentrated Sm salts are also presented for comparison. Two Pu3 doped LaCl3 samples were further investigated by the paramagnetic resonance absorption technique. Author
