Abstract:
About 5 lb of wire were finish processed to 0.004 in. diameter. The remaining 7 lb were at 0.006 in. diameter, being re-strand Cowles-and -lime coated for drawing to 0.004 in. diameter. It appears that the maximum strength is achieved by a 48-hr aging at 700F. Pickling appears desirable to improve strength. In a 35 HNO3-5HF bath only about 0.0003 in. are removed from the diameter. Slow heat-up rates were not conducive to strength improvements in this highly cold worked fine wire product. Controlled cold work prior to aging is not conducive to strength increases. Author
