Abstract:

Tue het apacity of high purity in 999.9 ws measured in the interval of 350 to 800 K. The high values of this thermodynamic property near the melting point 9.2 k0 had the appearance of lambda-like transitions associated with higher order changes of ste. he possibilty of a phse transformation, other than fusion, was ruled out on the bas of measurements of electrical resstivty, transvese and longtudinal sonic velocies, and X-ray ata. The process of fusion in in was identified as a ft order ansiion from the presre variation of the melting point. the effect of impries and grain size on the pre-melting phenomena were shown to be minor. the resuls of electrical measuremens were used as a check on the exstence of phse ransformaion and to oain the energy of formation of vacancies in In this was found to be 5500 aloies. he sharp decrese in the high heat capacty values for indum ner the meling point ay inicate the reak-down of clusters in the liqid. ince elecrical resstivity meurements and ultrasonic measurements failed to indicte any abnomlies ner the meing point, it is surised that fractionl crystaaion may have occred on the rough surfce of the mo ucible.
