Abstract:
This report includes Metals Research Lab., Carnegie Inst. of Tech., Pittsburgh, PA. STATITICAL EVALTION OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IN HEAT-TREATED AIS 4340 STEEL. Staistical anlysis of 5,000 test daa from nine forgings of AIS 4340 aicraft quality steel for a landing gear component shows that transverse dutility and toughness decrease 1 as a function of disance from surface to center of the ingot, 2 as a function of the hardenabiity of the partular ingot heat studied, and 3 as a function of the amount of reduction in cross-section when forging the ingot beyond a four to one reduction up to an eight to one reuction. Tansverse properties are more affected than longitudinl propeties and the effects are more pronounced as the strength level increases in the range to 200,000 - 300,000 psi. ATHO
