Abstract:

An equation is derived which determines the first correction to the Thomas-Fermi potential in terms of the Fermi momentum of the ordinary Thomas-Fermi model and the separation energy of an infinite electron gas. This correction describes the change from the Thomas-Fermi potential due to exchange, inhomogeneity, and correlation effects, and is the first term of a series whose higher members can, in principle, be found using the techniques described.
