Some effects of shock waves and boundary layers on airborne optical systems are examined. Calculations in the special cases of plane, conical and hemispherical shock waves are carried out to indicate the magnitude of angular error and defocusing likely to be encountered. An initial experimental program, to show the effects of the turbulent boundary layer is described, and some results are shown. Author
