Abstract:

The area for intensive investigation has been defined as that of gas-tight ceramic bodies suitable for tube envelopes. Reliability of ceramic-tometal seals in tubes, destined for use under extreme environmental conditions, requires a minimization of thermally-induced stresses between the joined ceramic and metal parts. Data taken from the literature, showing the discrepancy between the thermal expansion characteristics of metals and ceramics most frequently employed in ceramic electron tubes, is presented. The need for usable information on the characteristic behavior of metals when subjected to ceramic-to-metal sealing conditions is emphasized. The collection and compilation of pertinent published information has not been completed. Author
