Abstract:

The magnetic susceptibilities of erbium ethylsulphate and holmium ethylsulphate have been measured at temperatures between room temperature and 1.3 K. The results are compared with the values calculated from paramagnetic resonance data, and good agreement is obtained. The susceptibility of the erbium salt at low temperatures can be accounted for by a ground doublet having g 1.58 0.05 and g 8.53 0.05, with the lowest excited states some 150 cm above the ground doublet. The susceptibility of the holmium salt in the helium range of temperatures can be accounted for by a triplet ground state having g 7.70 0.05 and g 3.86 0.05, split into a doublet and a singlet, the singlet being 15.5 cm above the doublet. The Jahn-Teller splitting of the doublet is not more than 10.1 cm. Author
