Abstract:

Present effort is concerned with the theory of electromagnetic and space charge wave propagation in the resistive anisotropic medium. A system is developed which makes it possible to study the reflexion coefficients at the in- and output ends of a plane TWT. The input reflexion coefficient in particular is found to be surprisingly small under a variety of conditions. It is pointed out that the sum of the kinetic and electromagnetic power flows of a growing wave must vanish in a lossless system. This is also demonstrated in detail for the plane TWT. The axially inhomogeneous plane TWT is considered in some detail. It is shown that the corresponding fourth order wave equation can be solved by comparatively simple WKB-type methods if coupling between the individual waves is neglected. Furthermore, a set of four first order coupled wave equations is derived from which the effects of coupling between the individual waves can be estimated. The 8 different waves which can exist in a single-velocity magneto-ionic anisotropic homogeneous resistive medium are analysed.
