Abstract:

A distribution free, minimum variance, unbiased linear estimate of the future position vector of a target submarine based on spaced measurement of bearing angles is obtained. Partitioning of matrices and use of border determinants avoids explicit inversion of matrices. Smoothing of measured bearing angles by linear regression is investigated and the value of refinements is determined. The future position vector of the target cannot be estimated if the configuration of bearing lines is concurrent or is tangent to a non-degenerate parabola tangent to a target track, all under the assumption of a target having non-zero speed.
